Shipping

Nautical unsurpassable

With the water depth of the main entrance channel being faithfully maintained at 75 feet, even the largest vessels in the world can access the port without being hindered by locks, narrow channels or tides. Pilots, tug skippers, boatmen and the Port of Rotterdam Authority together ensure a tailor approach and fast turnaround times. In addition, Rotterdam offers a wide range of competitive supplementary services such as ship repair, ship supplies and bunkering.

Safe and efficient
In one of the busiest ports in the world, it is essential that all shipping traffic is handled as safely and efficiently as possible. Rotterdam therefore operates a unique Vessel Traffic Management System. This elaborate, high-tech network of traffic control centres and radar stations means ships can be constantly monitored, from 60 kilometres off the coast to the very hearth of the port area. The Harbour Coordination Center (HCC) is responsible for the central coordination of shipping traffic. Any ship carrying dangerous and hazardous substances also needs to report to the HCC. As far as safety is concerned, the port has a very strong track record.

Security comes first
In addition to safety, security is another important focal point for the port of Rotterdam. In fact, Rotterdam plays a leading role when it comes to the implementation of international security- related legislation. The port for instance fully meets the IMO’s international Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code).
