Intermodal transport

Sustainable and accessible port

From the port of Rotterdam there are daily connections with many European hinterland terminals. These are transit hubs where cargo can be transferred quickly from one mode of transport to another; from freight barge to train and truck, from short sea/feeder to train. Due to the high volumes, waiting times are short, operations are efficient and costs are low.

Rotterdam is striving to create a situation whereby Europe is optimally accessible by rail and inland shipping. Intermodal transport results in less congested roads, it lightens the burden on carriers and lowers the costs for everyone, and the Port Authority plays an active role in this by:

  • Aiming for supply chain efficiency
The increasing cargo flows demand optimum supply chain efficiency. To ensure that the port remains easily accessible, the Port of Rotterdam Authority brings together all links in the supply chain for discussions. Thanks to coordination and consultation between the various parties, the available capacity can be put to optimum use and the quality of the services provided can be further improved.

  • Striving towards a modal shift
In connection with a sustainable future, one of the Port of Rotterdam Authority’s ambitions is to achieve a modal shift from road transport to inland shipping and rail. New contracts with tenants contain concrete agreements on this.

  • Development of container transferium
In conjunction with market parties, the Port of Rotterdam Authority is responsible for initiating a container transferium on the eastern side of the port. Trucks deliver and collect their containers here, then freight barges provide connecting transport to and from the container terminals on the Maasvlakte. This means that trucks no longer need to travel right through the port.
