The Port of Rotterdam Authority is signing a Declaration of Intent today, 19 March, with Autorità Portuale di Taranto, a Southern Italian port. The goal is to conduct joint research into the feasibility of further cooperation between the parties in order, ultimately, to jointly execute the management of the Taranto port. The Port Authority is already prepared to take on some management responsibilities in Taranto, under certain conditions.
The Declaration of Intent fits with the Port Authority's policy of expanding its activities abroad. The Port Authority has a successful joint venture with the Sultanate of Oman, the Sohar Industrial Port Company. It would like to develop similar initiatives and to this end is focusing on countries such as China, Brazil, India and Romania.
