Green Light for Steam Grid in Botlek

The construction of a steam grid in Rotterdam’s Botlek area can be started. February 15,  Rotterdam-based grid manager Stedin signed agreements with waste management company and steam supplier AVR and chemicals supplier and steam consumer Emerald Kamala Chemical (EKC). This officially gives a green light to construction of a steam grid in Rotterdam’s Botlek area.

Along with Stedin, the Port of Rotterdam and contractor Visser & Smit Hanab are co-sponsors of the steam grid’s development. The latter will build the grid on behalf of Stedin. The steam grid is supported and co-financed through a “Green Deal” with the Rotterdam Climate Initiative.

The objective of the grid is to distribute steam from one plant to surrounding plants using steam for production. These plants currently generate steam from fossil fuel at very high costs. The steam grid will reduce their CO2 footprint considerably as well as improving air quality.

Grid operator Stedin delivers safe and continuous energy to its clients, now and in the future. That’s why it is investing in new and sustainable energy infrastructures in addition to the traditional delivery of gas and electricity to two million clients.
With a waste processing capacity of some 1.7 million tonnes, AVR, a division of the Van Gansewinkel Groep, is a market leader in the Benelux region. In its role as waste services provider and energy supplier, it supplies heat to surrounding cities through its incineration activities, steam to surrounding companies and electricity to the power grid.
Emerald Kalama Chemical is a producer of specialised chemicals including food and beverage preservatives, intermediary taste and flavour products, softening agents and other additives.
