The Dutch Ministry of Transport, the province of North Brabant and the municipality of Tilburg mean to commission the Heijmans-Boskalis consortium to widen and deepen the Wilhelmina Canal and to construct a new lock. The contract has a total value of more than € 51 million. It is anticipated that the definitive contract will be awarded at the end of May.
The municipality and the province want to continue and boost the economic position of the town by ensuring good access to the city by water, road and rail. The work on the Wilhelmina Canal plays an important part in this. The project consists of widening and deepening the current canal (for a distance of around 4 km), building a new lock (next to the current lock III) and demolishing lock II. The work will start in October 2013. The new lock will be put into use in May 2015, after which the water level can be lowered in September 2015. The complete delivery of the work will take place in 2016.
