Characteristic of a mainport such as Rotterdam is that all kinds of different cargo flows come together there. These various cargo flows (such as oil, ores and coal, or fruit and dry bulk, roll-on/roll-off and containers) are handled by specialized companies. Whenever possible, these companies are clustered; consequently, Rotterdam can be typified as a collection of specialized ports.
