Activity in the port is on the increase whilst space in the port is limited. In this conflicting situation, the Port of Rotterdam Authority must handle the sites still available with care, ensure that existing terminals are used more intensively, search for innovative solutions and reclaim new land from the sea before it is too late.

From 2012-2014 onwards, the existing Rotterdam port area will no longer be able to accommodate further (container) growth in the port. The Port Authority is therefore involved in the construction of  Maasvlakte 2, to ensure that enough land is available, in time, particularly for container handling, but also for the chemical industry and distribution.

Parallel to the construction of Maasvlakte 2, work is going into improving the quality of life of the region and the city by developing nature and recreation areas and making better use of the existing port area.
