Fewer oil spills in port of Rotterdam
03-03-2009
The number of oil spills in the port of Rotterdam fell last year from 289 (2007) to 193 (2008).Fifteen years ago, this number was as many as 600. With this spillage, 20 cubic metres of water was polluted. The year before, that was 313 cubic metres, but the accident in the 8th Petroleumhaven accounted for most of this. On 18 January 2007, the container ship CMA-CGM Claudel destroyed an oil jetty at the Maasvlakte Oil Terminal.
Most spills take place during fuel bunkering and involve less than 250 litres. In the past fifteen years, bunkering operations have increased sharply from 8 to 13 million tonnes. Harbour master Jaap Lems attributes the marked decline in the number of spills to a strict compliance policy, whereby every spill is verbalised; an intensive report and control regime for bunker operations; an intensive enforcement of the international ship-to-shore-safety checklists. All of this has contributed towards a considerable improvement in the quality of the waterbed in the port. Only 5% of the dredged material is now polluted. In 1986, that was 75%.
