01-20-2010

Rotterdam – January 19, The bunkering of gas oil rose last year in Rotterdam by about 20%, from 252,414 tonnes to 302,607 tonnes. At the end of 2009, sales of this light oil increased considerably due to new environmental regulations issued by the European Union. Ocean-going vessels which berth for more than two hours must use fuel with a sulphur content of no more than 0.1%, or in other words gas oil.

BunkerhavenIn 2009, sales of bunkers in Rotterdam fell by 6%, from almost 13 to 12.2 million tonnes. The decline is due to the credit crisis. As a result, fewer ships arrived in the port last year. Throughput was down 8.5% in the port of Rotterdam last year.

In total, 302,607 tonnes of gas oil, 11,732,038 tonnes of fuel oil, 22,715 tonnes of diesel oil and 110,232 tonnes of lubricating oil were bunkered. That resulted in total sales of 12,167,592 tonnes. The number of bunker deliveries fell slightly, from 21,864 to 20,748.

Along with Singapore and Fujairah (United Emirates), Rotterdam is among the top three bunker ports in the world.
