Creating business value by implementing innovative solutions requires more than just a good idea. It requires entrepreneurship, the right people and an area to develop and test ideas. Together with partners, the Port of Rotterdam Authority is building an innovation ecosystem in which innovations can grow into successful enterprises.
Port Innovation Lab
To boost innovation, the Port Authority places heavy emphasis on attracting start-ups to come to the port of Rotterdam and conquer the world from there. The Port of Rotterdam Authority and YES!Delft have joined forces in the Port Innovation Lab, which is focused on creating new business ideas. Ambitious professionals, researchers, scientists and students participate in events and workshops and can make use of coaches, an extensive network and test facilities. Applications can be field-tested immediately, thus enabling many start-ups to get off to a flying start.
The port of Rotterdam and the city of Rotterdam form a magnet for people with innovative ideas and concepts. Rotterdam further steps up its ambition to be the smartest port in the world. For this unique project, internationally recognized companies like EY, Cambridge Innovation Center / Venture Cafe, Van Oord, Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship, Heineken, Innovation Quarter, Rabobank, Count. / First Dutch, Vopak, Damen, E.ON, Boskalis and the Port of Rotterdam have joined forces. Together they offer port-related startups a chance to kickstart their ideas during an intensive three months program.
RDM Rotterdam is the innovation display window for the Rotterdam port area where technology is visualised in attractive ways. In the middle of the port – yet surprisingly close to the city – the former shipyard of the Rotterdam Dry Dock Company (RDM) provides space for companies, and the education and research sectors. Together they work here on shaping the new manufacturing industry for the port and the city. This is supplemented by a wide range of business and cultural events thus creating a dynamic and energetic RDM. RDM Rotterdam is implemented by the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.
SmartPort is a unique partnership between Deltalinqs, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the Municipality of Rotterdam, Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Delft University of Technology. In SmartPort, the best researchers and the most innovative companies are working together on the challenges of tomorrow. SmartPort focuses on businesses in and around the port and industrial complex that through scientific research want to bring opportunities for the future within reach. Companies and the academic community help make the port innovative to such a degree that Rotterdam will continue to be trendsetting in the future as well.
More than 120 affiliated companies, including the Port Authority, share their knowledge within the iTanks knowledge platform under the motto: “From individual challenges to joint solutions”. iTanks innovates by actually implementing ideas. This has already led to various concrete results, such as “Jopie”, the cleaning robot for dolphins, and a welding torch with an integrated welding vapour exhaust system. iTanks organises various activities, such as brainstorming sessions, roundtable discussions, conferences, innovation pitches, training programmes, case studies and master classes.
World Port Hackathon
The World Port Hackathon takes place each year during the World Port Days in Rotterdam. Students, hackers, designers, coders and creative individuals set to work using open data and big data. They use the information available in the port to develop solutions to a wide range of issues. They are given 24 hours to develop concepts and prototypes on the basis of this data. The event is supported by all key parties in and around the port and the issues they work on are submitted by companies themselves.
