Title: Commercial Intermodal Manager of Maersk
1. What is the most striking, startling or surprising development in the maritime sector that caught your attention lately? And can you explain why?
"This has to be the annoucement of the P3 a couple of weeks ago. The operational consolidation by the three biggest carriers is a huge statement of intent."
2. How did you get in your current position at Maersk Line?
"I started working for Maersk Line in 2008. During the first 4 years I was responsible for managing several customer service teams on the import side. For me this was an ideal environment to learn about shipping. Halfway through 2012 I took on the role of Commercial Intermodal Manager; in this role I have the bottom line responsibility for our inland product; the range being our intermodal product offerings and the subsequent (smart) repositioning of our empty containers."
3. What is your personal highlight in 2013 that makes you proud?
"From a business point of view the introduction of our Inland CY (barge services to and from Inland terminals) offerings and increase from two locations to seven in the Netherlands has been the highlight so far this year. With this product we as Maersk Line are committing ourselves to placing the emphasis on greener barge transportation. From a personal point of view the highlight is still to come: as per August, I will be taking up a new role at Rotterdam World Gateway on the business development side."
4. What are the biggest challenges for Maersk Line this year?
"As for every carrier the biggest challenge is to ensure the ocean freight rates are at a sustainable level."
5. What makes your work very special?
"Let me start by saying that my job is one of the most multi-faceted in our organisation. Product development, process improvement, project management, stakeholder management, teaming up with our sales force to actively sell our inland products; some of the tasks that keep me busy on any given day. The fact that all these facets come together in one job makes it special in my opinion."
