Maasvlakte Plaza: where the truckers sleep

Where do truckers sleep if they have to stay overnight in the port? Preferably at Maasvlakte Plaza. Every evening this immense truck park fills to the brim, as shown in the time-lapse. That’s why the Port of Rotterdam Authority is aiming for a substantial expansion of the site this autumn.

The truck park next to the Slufter on Maasvlakte has almost 360 spaces. For a small fee, truckers can stay here safely (as it’s monitored) and enjoy all conveniences such as showers, toilets, washing machines and dryers, lockers and trucker restaurant Routiers.

More parking spaces for trucks

The site, which opened in 2017, is now so popular that there’s regularly just one space left. The Port Authority has decided to have the site expanded by a further 200 spaces this autumn so no truckers need to be disappointed. Additional good parking spaces in the port also improves driver and cargo safety.

The Port Authority had this time-lapse produced during the investigation into the use of Maasvlakte Plaza. The video shows the site over a 24-hour cycle. For more than a minute and a half, we can watch the ‘heartbeat’ of trucking traffic in the port: from the huge exodus before daybreak, to the great lull during the afternoon, after which things start getting crowded again until 3.00 am, when the first trucks start to leave again. So those who have ever driven by an empty truck park in the afternoon and thought to themselves, what on earth is all this parking space for - this video gives you the answer.
