There is a steady flow of rail freight transport in the port of Rotterdam. The whole of Europe is easily accessible by freight train. The freight trains still have sufficient capacity to transport extra cargo.
Due to the coronacrisis, more carriages are temporarily stabled than usual. ProRail sometimes experiences a shortage of siding space in its planning system. ProRail is currently setting up a process to determine the actual occupancy rate of the sidings and make them available to the planning and operation divisions of ProRail, transporters and operators. The Carriage Cargo Information System is one of the tools being used. To date, all stabling capacity requests have been honoured, including those for the busy rail freight hubs Waalhaven, Maasvlakte and Kijfhoek.
To anticipate the unexpected scenario that a larger-scale shutdown in European countries/regions leads to a need for longer stabling of carriages in and around the port of Rotterdam, ProRail and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have asked market parties to also stable carriages elsewhere long term. This is to ensure that in the event of such a scenario, joint efforts can be made to guarantee the flow of freight trains in the port of Rotterdam. A joint taskforce of ProRail and the rail freight operators monitors the occupancy of the sidings weekly, identifies impending bottlenecks and anticipates solutions to ensure that the freight trains in and from and to the port of Rotterdam can continue to run.

Despite the far-reaching social impact of the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), the port of Rotterdam will remain operational. Cargo handling and production will continue unabated. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is carefully complying with the recommendations of national authorities in the field of health and safety, and we have taken steps to safeguard the continuity of business operations.
