The new Sif plant at Maasvlakte 2 completed its first shipment of monopiles on 20 September. The piles, each with a length of over 80 metres, will be transported to the Galloper wind farm along the eastern coast of the UK this December. Here, they will be used as foundation piles for local offshore wind turbines.
Sif will be supplying a total of 54 monopiles to the Galloper project from its new Maasvlakte 2 facility. Monopiles are cylindrical steel tubes that are positioned deep in the sea bed. The monopiles will serve as a base for a centre section, which in turn supports the wind turbine itself. The various parts of the monopiles were all manufactured at Sif’s plant in Roermond. The first parts for the new monopiles already arrived at the Maasvlakte 2 facility on 4 September, at which point the Rotterdam team could start on assembly. Before being shipped to the United Kingdom, the monopiles will first be given a special coating.
