TEUbooker, the online container transport booking portal in the Port of Rotterdam, has acquired Wayz from Post-Kogeko. The acquisition strengthens TEUbooker’s position as synchro-modal supply chain coordinator in the container logistics branch. Since launching in November 2016, TEUbooker has handled container transfers by barge, rail and truck for several shipping companies and terminals within the Port of Rotterdam.
Wayz began operations in 2011 with the establishment of a synchro-modal Control Tower and since then has removed a large number of fruit and vegetable containers from road transport. 54% of these containers have been transported by inland barge. This has prevented around 250,000 road kilometres and a subsequent annual reduction of 18,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
The extensive experience of refrigerated container logistics that has been built up by Wayz over the years is a valuable addition to TEUbooker’s market proposition. Wayz has close contacts with shippers, receivers and forwarders in the Westland and Barendrecht areas. Talking about the acquisition, Frans Swarttouw, Managing Director of TEUbooker, says: “In cooperation with Wayz, we want to make a solid contribution to multimodal access via the Eemhaven Reefer City Hub in the heart of Rotterdam port. The planning tool enables clients to book containers in existing inland barge transports up until the last moment. This, in turn, will substantially reduce traffic congestion on the A15 motorway, which will have an immediate positive effect on the port’s accessibility.”
Harald Lourens, Financial Director of Post Kogeko: “Post-Kogeko was looking for a partner who could substantiate and emphasize the independent refrigerated container transport activities of Wayz in relation to cargo carriers and shippers. The acquisition by TEUbooker will reinforce this independence, thus allowing Post-Kogeko to focus on its core activities, which include container transport. It is a win-win situation for both TEUbooker and Post Kogeko.”
TEUbooker will bundle container flows from the Eemhaven area and book these on inland waterways. In this way, together with participating inland barge operators, TEUbooker will create a maritime conveyor belt. Working with such an independent supply chain coordinator, companies can book container transport with confidence. Through the process of combining reefer transports, the inland shipping sector can increase container traffic from the Maasvlakte to Eemhaven and vice versa. Utilising clever combinations, the planning tool gives insight into import and export flows so that shipper’s assets can be deployed more efficiently. Hans Nagtegaal, Director of Containers at the Port of Rotterdam: “The Rotterdam Port Authority congratulates TEUbooker with the expansion of its portfolio. It is a positive development that will further increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the Port of Rotterdam.”
Containers are transported by road from the Reefer City Hub to destinations in Westland and Barendrecht. Road haulage companies can deploy their fleets more efficiently and prevent wasted journeys. Swarttouw: “TEUbooker sees the Reefer City Hub as the first inland terminal where we will test our proposition. In the coming months, the next step will be to connect with container terminals located further inland.” Shippers and forwarders can use TEUbooker as a tool to gain direct insight into the transport possibilities of transferring containers to and from the seaport by inland barge and rail. In a personal dashboard, users can follow container movements and subsequent (CO2) savings directly.
TEUbooker is the online booking portal for container transport from the Port of Rotterdam to the European hinterland. The platform offers a convenient tool to facilitate the booking of container transport using inland waterway and rail transport to increase the modal split.
