On 27 November 2023, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Rijkswaterstaat and the Central Government Real Estate Agency will organise a market information day for market parties interested in the Zon op De Slufter tender. The De Slufter dredging depot is making 80 hectares of water surface available to create a floating solar park.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Rijkswaterstaat store contaminated dredging spoil at the De Slufter depot, jointly managing and maintaining this depot on the Maasvlakte. To make smart use of scarce space, they want to combine this existing operation with solar power generation in the future. Part of this area is therefore being offered for rent for 27 years.

Generate renewable energy

Floating the solar panels in the dredging depot means no additional space is needed to generate renewable energy on this site. The extreme western location of the De Slufter depot makes it one of the sunniest spots in the Netherlands. The area has the potential to accommodate an installed capacity of around 128 MWp, making it the largest floating solar park in Europe. This generates an annual amount of sustainable electricity equivalent to the consumption of about 33,000 households and a CO2 reduction of over 50 ktonne.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority, Rijkswaterstaat and the Central Government Real Estate Agency are preparing the tender and the Port of Rotterdam Authority will manage the tender. The tendering process is expected to start late 2023 or early 2024. The party designated to build the floating solar park will be selected in 2024.

During the market information day at De Slufter, market participants will receive further information about the area and the tender. There will also be an opportunity for the initiators, market participants and other interested parties to share information.
