Renovation Rozenburg Lock
Around 20,000 ships go through the Rozenburg Lock each year. The lock provides easy access to and from the western port area. Since several parts of the lock are in need of replacement, the lock will be renovated. We will convert the lock into a remote-operated lock, including with the use of cameras. After the renovation, the lock will be prepared for the future.
What will be renovated?
We will carry out the work in phases.
- The north fender piles will be renewed first.
- We will then renovate the rest of the lock complex: the gully including the lock gates, both bridges, the control and operating units, the buildings and the exterior area.
- We will prepare the lock for remote operation.
When will the work take place?
The Northern fender piles was completed in 2024. From June 2025, we will work with a contractor to finalise plans to lock the lock for six months in 2026. In 2027, we will finish all the work and the lock will be operated remotely.
As little impact on the local residents as possible
We will perform the work with minimum inconvenience for the local residents. Very limited disruption is expected for road traffic. Temporary closures will apply to shipping traffic during the renovation work. These are expected to take place the second part of 2025 and we will communicate via Shipping Announcements (BAS).
About the lock
- The Rozenburg Lock is a lock with chamber that has connected the Calandkanaal to the Hartelkanaal since 1971. Some 20,000 inland vessels use it every year.
- The lock has a length of 305 metres and a width of 24 metres. The Rozenburg Lock is operated 24/7 by bridge and lock operators from the Port Authority.
- The lock still fulfils an important function for the accessibility and safety of the port. Of the inland vessels using the lock, 60% are tankers, 20% dry bulk carriers, 10% service vessels and sometimes push barge vessels. Some 45 million tonnes of freight pass through the lock every year.
- The Rozenburg Lock was in the news because of the diversion of the port railway line across the Theemsweg. The Theemsweg route, which was connected to the existing port railway line in November 2021, includes two arched bridges, one of which was built over the Rozenburg Lock.
