Trainee Commercial

Are you about to graduate and do you want to make a flying start at a leading company?  Do you want to find out what your strengths are and how you want to develop? Then you should apply for a trainee position with the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the company that works for the entire port. And the company that aims to ensure that our port remains the most efficient, smartest and most sustainable port in the world.
The Port Authority has two core tasks: the sustainable development, management and operation of the port, and the maintenance of the smooth and safe handling of shipping. That means we operate in the often complex context of commercial interests, political interests and social developments. So our work is particularly exciting and unique. This is the opportunity to make a challenging start to your career in a unique environment.

As soon as you join us, you will start work on an enjoyable and challenging assignment in the commercial department. The assignments are varied. They may be projects in which we want to make optimal use of the available data for our customers. Because the various actors in the port share their data, there are opportunities to optimise the supply chain. The challenge is to get the different parties to cooperate with each other and to communicate the shared objective.
Or you may be asked to work out the details of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the port authority. An MoU often includes a declaration of intent to work together. Your job will be to put that into practice. That means identifying projects and starting them up.
In another alternative, you may be asked to come up with recommendations about the approach to port dues. Do the procedures still comply with the requirements of the Port Authority and our clients? Are we fulfilling our commercial objectives? And could the approach be easier to work with or smarter?

Wat ga je doen?

The traineeship consists of four practical assignments. An assignment may be a project. Another option is working in a straightforward job. For the first period of six months, we have already thought about where you can deliver added value. Of course, there will be a close match with the studies you have just completed.
You will make the arrangements for the other three assignments yourself in line with your learning goals. Your first and fourth assignments will be in the same department; the second and third assignments will be in different departments. Each period will last six months. Working in different departments will give you the opportunity to learn a lot about our organisation, provide you with a clear picture of your capabilities, and significantly increase your employability!
You will follow a range of training courses every month alongside your assignments and supervision on the job. That includes project management, in-depth learning about strategy, negotiation techniques, stakeholder management and personal effectiveness. There will also be a specific emphasis on data-driven work. During the traineeship, you will be intensively supervised by your manager and HR.

Wat vragen wij van jou?

You will obtain an academic qualification in a commercial subject soon, with excellent study results.
You have a maximum of two years of experience in the field.
And you want to use your knowledge in a creative way to come up with the smartest solutions.
You know how to connect and achieve goals in collaboration with others.
You have excellent learning skills and you can solve problems pro-actively.
Of course, you are also eager to work for the best port in Europe.

Wat bieden we jou?

We also have a company sports centre and good pension arrangements.
At the end of your traineeship, you will have been employed here for two years and you will have got to know the port authority from a range of perspectives. Won't it be wonderful to move on to a job that matches your ambitions and that you have discovered during your traineeship?
