Import of hydrogen

Rotterdam aims to be the leading port for sustainable energy. An important part of Rotterdam as Europe's Hydrogen Hub is the import of hydrogen.

Port of Rotterdam wants to accelerate the import of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers such as ammonia, methanol, and LOHCs (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers) and is therefore launching a market consultation.

The Port Authority is working with various partners towards the introduction of a large-scale hydrogen network across the port complex, making Rotterdam an international hub for hydrogen production, import, application and transport to other countries in Northwest Europe. The hub will also enable Rotterdam to maintain its position as important energy port for Northwest Europe in the future.

ROTTERDAM'S HYDROGEN ECOSYSTEM IS BEING BUILT RIGHT NOW

Renewable energy is being generated at scale on the North Sea. Extensive new electrical infrastructure will feed multiple electrolysers, converting this clean power to hydrogen.

Emissions from hydrogen produced from natural gas will be captured and stored deep under the North Sea. Hydrogen produced around the world will be imported to state-of-the-art terminals in Rotterdam.

The construction of the national hydrogen network commenced in 2023 in the port of Rotterdam. Hynetwork is rolling out the network in phases, with the first section in Rotterdam expected to become operational in 2026. From 2030, it will be connected to Chemelot in Limburg, North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany and other European regions. Besides pipelines, barges are essential to supply hydrogen to future customers in the port and north-western Europe.

The sum of these components will make hydrogen affordable for an extensive range of applications. For industries such as production of fuel, fertilizers, steel and chemicals. For shipping, aviation and trucking fuels. And for electrical power production and industrial processes.
